It's Official - Starter Clinic - May 12, 2012
It’s Official!
Carla MacQuarrie and York Friesen are holding STARTER CLINIC , 7:30 am SATURDAY MAY 12 in the BROOKLYN ROOM at the DARTMOUTH SPORTSPLEX. This is an excellent opportunity for club officials to move up in the ranks and gain more experience. Following is a summary of the position.
The Starter
The starter position is critical to running a successful meet. His position is to ensure that fair starts are achieved consistently throughout the session .
To exercise this function a starter:
Must have a good working knowledge of the rules.
Must be consistent and exercise good judgment
Must earn confidence of the swimmer
Must respect the swimmers and enjoy the sport.
The starter with the referee , control the rhythm and the timing of a meet.
The starters location is on the side of the pool about 5 meters from the starting edge so the time keepers can see and hear the starting signal and the swimmers can hear the signal.
After the referee’s whistle and upon seeing his out stretched arm, the starter has full control of the swimmers. With the words “TAKE YOUR MARKS “, The swimmers must assume the start position and be stationary before the starting signal can be given. If there is movement , the start signal should not be given and the swimmers asked to step down. This puts the start back in the referee’s hands to repeat the process.
If at the start there is movement , the race is to continue and the swimmers is to be disqualified after the race . if that swimmer created a ragged start and a fair start was not achieved , the race is to be recalled and no swimmer is to be disqualified. This is considered an officials error. All disqualifications must be approved by the referee.
The starter may assume other responsibilities such as a turn judge or relay take over judge.
This position is again one of almost 40 officials required to run a successful meet. It is still one of the best seats in the house and you get fed.
Courses for all positions are available. Please contact Bill Ferguson chairs of officials.

Chair of officials

Swimming World Coverage
Swimming World is covering the Canadian Olympic swimming team's training camp in Phoenix ,Arizona. On the April 24 edition of The Morning Swim Show host Peter Busch runs down the men's roster with Canadian Olympic head coach Randy Bennett. While the entire interview is great, the best part (well, we think it's the best part) is at the end of the interview (10:33) when he describes David Sharpe as "a really neat story…good boy..really nice…" and HTAC Head Coach Aaron Maszko as "…fantastic coach…" !
You can watch the interview by clicking on the hyperlink on the front page of the Swim Canada - http://www.swimming.ca ("Morning Swim Show features Canadian Olympic Team")
Bravo David and Aaron - way to put Nova Scotia on the "Swimming World" map!
